Siskiyou County

Siskiyou County is located in northern California near the Oregon border. Shadowed by the majestic Mount Shasta its center, the area offers an abundance of views, activities and sites to see. One of these sites, the historic Siskiyou Trail, was originally formed by Native American footpaths and was later extended by the Hudson Bay’s Company Trappers. When the gold miners, affectionately called “forty-niners” struck gold in 1851 near Yreka, a great rush of tourism bombarded Siskiyou County. Suddenly all of her treasures were open to be explored, the Southern Pacific Railroad deemed its railroad line at the time the “road of one thousand wonders”. Filled with lakes and dense forests, Siskiyou County offers an array of outdoor activities- from fishing to gold panning, biking to skiing. The Sacramento and McCloud Rivers are well known for their world famous trout, and Lake Shastina is a great place to spend a warm summer afternoon. The Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge offers a sanctuary for the animal lover, and was sited in Sunset Magazine leading the top of the list of the top western birding destinations. The Klamath River provides a relaxing ride down the Tree of Heaven trail, and also boasts Class V whitewater rapids for the more adventurous. You can take a hike to Black Butte, which resides between Mount Shasta City and Weeds for spectacular views and nearby Medicine Lake Highlands is the largest identified volcano in California. Highway 96 is a scenic route that runs along the Klamath River- it’s a drive you can’t afford not to make! For sports of the colder variety, Bunny Flat is great skiing or snowboarding for beginners and experts alike. Of course you can’t forget about Siskiyou County’s crowning jewel- Mount Shasta. Great for passionate mountaineers and hikers, Mount Shasta provides a challenging but rewarding climb. The hike was ranked #40 in the top 100 U.S. Adventures for 2000 by National Geographic Adventure Magazine. Surrounded by beauty from all sides, you will be in awe of all this county has to offer- truly something for everyone.
