|The Wahluke Slope AVA lies in south central Washington, and is bordered by the Columbia River, Saddle Mountains and Hanford Reach National Monument, all centered around the community of Mattawa. There is a deep history of grape growing in Mattawa. The desert heat and abundance of water create excellent conditions for wine grapes.
One of the warmest regions in the state, with heat units consistently exceeding 3000, Wahluke Slope is known primarily for red grape varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Other varietals grown include Riesling, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc. Wines tend to be full-bodied with pure flavor.
The distinguishing feature of Wahluke Slope is its uniformity in soil type and climate. This, along with the proximity to the Columbia River, helps minimize the risk of frost. Topsoil is deep wind blown sand which provides ample drainage for vines. Named for "watering place" by Native Americans, precipitation averages less than 6 inches annually. Irrigation is required.
Top wine makers consider the Wahluke Slope the backbone of the Washington wine industry. They rely on its grapes to provide big flavors and structure for their wines.
It’s not surprising vineyards in this area have created wines with high accolades. Wine Enthusiast awarded a 100 point rating to a wine. Wine Spectator named a wine from Wahluke Slope “Wine of the Year” in 2009. The consistency of soil type shows up in the vine growth and subsequently in the wines.
